About 50 kilometers/31 miles out of the capital city lies a little gem mostly known for its fairytale views, you’ll see why. Bled is a small town yet there are quite a lot of things you can do and see.

The Bled Castle

The oldest recorded Slovenian castle rises 130 metres/426 feet above the glacier Lake Bled. This medieval Castle dates back to the 11th century. Although most of the Castle still dates back to the 16th century, it was restored after being heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1511. In the Castle, there is a museum with a collection of the city’s history. The Bled Castle offers captivating views of the city, the lake and also both the Karavanke and Julijan Alps mountains. The walk to the Castle takes about 15 minutes but you can drive and park at the top as well.

The Bled Lake and the Island

This glacier Lake offers a swimming spot in the summer and an ice skating park in the winter. The blue-green water reaches up to 26°C (79°F) from June through August and drops below zero in the winter.

It is 2,120 meters/1,32 miles long and 1,380 metres/0,86 miles wide, you can take a walk around it, it takes about an hour and a half and offers some amazing views and relaxing spots.

Visiting the Island in the middle of the lake is an experience of its own since this the only Slovenian natural island and because of the trip to the Island itself mentioned below. Once on the island, walk to the Church of the Assumption of Mary dating back to the 1400’s, which is a great spot for weddings and it is actually a tradition for the groom to carry the bride up all the 99 steps leading to the church – good luck guys! Be sure to ring the wishing bell, but not before making a wish.

Row, row, row your boat or take a Pletna to the Island

A boat ride on the lake is a muss when in Bled. You can row your own boat, there are plenty of rental options or you can take a ride with a traditional wooden Pletna boat, which we definitely recommend! The captain or the Pletna Oarsman will do all the work so that you can enjoy the ride and all the beautiful views.

Hiking and the Mountain Landscapes

There is a lot hiking places around the Lake Bled and in fact around the city. Here are some suggestions:

  • Ojstrica – a 611 meters/2,005 feet high, 20min hike for a great panoramic view of the city.
  • Osojnica – this hill offers yet another astonishing view of the city, a 45 minutes walk to Mala Osojnica (685 meters/2,247 feet) or an hour walk to Velika Osojnica (756 meters/2480 feet) are your options.
  • Kuhovnica – this is a hidden trail, maybe a little harder to find, but worth every minute, the views are amazing.

Take a horse carriage ride

A popular thing to do for tourists and locals is taking a carriage ride. Well, what could be more fun than taking a horse and carriage ride around the mesmerizing lake by coachmen or a “fijaker” in his traditional costume? It’s lovely for families and can be quite romantic for couples.

Tobogganing on the Straza

For a touch of adrenaline visit the Straža a skiing location with adrenaline activities in the winter offseason. You can take a “Funbob” ride, go tobogganing and ride the sledding track on the ski slope.

Explore the Vintgar Gorge

Not far from the city and Lake Bled there’s another hidden diamond, the Vintgar Gorge. Through the George flows the Radovna River. The trail path will take you over wooden bridges and stone paths among the beautiful views of the river, waterfalls, pools and cascades.
